Economic, political, and social challenges of European colonialism and its aftermath. Among the issues Muslims wrestle with are the nature of modernity itself, the place of religious law in modern society, the relationship between religion and government, whether or not religion should inform economic policy, the status of women, the nature of international relations, inter-communal and inter-faith relations, as well as ongoing conflicts and the development of radicalism among sectors of Muslim society. This course will examine diverse Muslim views on each of these issues, including several case studies, in order to understand both commonalities and diversity in modern Islam.
