Rémi Caucanas’ participation in Tangaza University College activities

Rémi Caucanas, Researcher Associate at PISAI, participated in two recent conferences held at the Tangaza University College (TUC) in Nairobi. The first conference, organised by the Institute for Interreligious Dialogue and Islamic Studies (IRDIS), was held from 17 to 19 January 2023 under the title ‘African Discourses and Research on Religion and Human Dignity’. Rémi Caucanas presented an address on the religious motivations behind slavery. Focusing on the period of the so-called Great Discoveries, he highlighted the relationship between the mentality of the medieval crusades, the Iberian maritime expeditions and the beginning of the modern slave trade between Africa, Europe and America.

The second conference was organised by the Department of Church History as part of the ‘2023 Theological Symposium’. It took place on 16 and 17 February 2023 and brought together a dozen scholars from Africa and Europe with the aim of studying various aspects of the Church’s action in the face of disease in a post-pandemic context. Rémi Caucanas gave a presentation on ‘Infection and Evangelisation’, highlighting some common aspects between the American contexts and the North African experience.
