The PISAI warmly congratulates Cardinal Michael L. Fitzgerald, who received an honorary Doctorate in Divinity from Liverpool Hope University, on 17 March 2022.
Cardinal Fitzgerald, ordained as priest in 1961 as a member of the Society of Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers), has devoted much of his life to interreligious dialogue, fostering links between Christian and Muslim communities. In January this year he was awarded an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list for services to interfaith and inter-Church partnerships.
Cardinal Fitzgerald was the Apostolic Nuncio to Egypt and Delegate to the League of Arab States from 2006 until his retirement in 2012. Previously he had been Secretary (1987-2002) and then President (2002-2006) of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. He worked at PISAI from 1968 to 1978, first in the role of lecturer and then as President (1972-1978). He currently ministers at the inner-city parish of St Vincent de Paul in Liverpool.
