The PISAI academic community congratulates Prof. Bartolomeo Pirone, Adjunct Professor at PISAI and former Professor of Arabic Language and Literature at the University of Naples “L’Orientale”, on the publication of his new book, Al-Malik al-Kāmil e i cristiani d’Egitto (Milan, Edizioni Terra Santa, 2021).
Many are familiar with the encounter between the sultan al-Malik al-Kāmil and St. Francis of Assisi during the sojourn of the Poverello in the Orient, but until now no one had performed a careful study of the sultan himself. Based on Arabic sources, both Christian and Muslim, contemporary to the events narrated, Prof. Pirone fills this void, providing for the first time an accurate and detailed study of the man who welcomed the saint with an open heart and mind.
This new book continues the professor’s line of research, both through studies and translations, on Eastern Christians and their relations with Muslims; among his other publications are Vite di santi egiziani (Edizioni Terra Santa, 2013) and Infedeli. I cristiani sotto il dominio dell’islam da Maometto al XX secolo (Edizioni Terra Santa, 2019).
