Georgetown Lecture on Contemporary Islam

On Thursday 6 May 2021 took place the fifth Georgetown Lecture on Contemporary Islam entitled “The Visit of Pope Francis to Iraq. Its Significance for Religious Relations”.

The lecture, held online for the first time, is part of a series, begun in 2017, sponsored by the Office of the President at Georgetown University. Thursday’s event was co-sponsored by Georgetown’s Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs and the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding.

After the introductory remarks by Diego Sarrió Cucarella, M.Afr., President of PISAI, and John J. DeGioia, President of Georgetown University, Cardinal Michael L. Fitzgerald, M.Afr. (former President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue), and Cindy Wooden (Rome Bureau Chief, Catholic News Service), offered their reflections on the Pope’s visit to Iraq in March 2021. Jason Welle, OFM, Director of Studies at PISAI, moderated the event, and John Borelli, Special Assistant for Catholic Identity and Dialogue at Georgetown University, provided concluding remarks. The event attracted hundreds of views, following via Zoom, Facebook, and YouTube.
