Jason Welle, O.F.M., Director of Studies at PISAI, recently participated in an interreligious panel discussion entitled “Beyond Damietta” at the Centro Pro Unione in Rome. 2019 was the 800th anniversary of the encounter between St. Francis of Assisi and the Ayyūbid Sultan al-Malik al-Kāmil in Damietta, Egypt; now that the commemorations of that anniversary have ended, this roundtable discussion on January 13th looked to the future of Muslim-Christian relations, particularly in connection with the Franciscan family. The event featured two Muslim panelists in addition to Welle: Mustafa Cenap Aydin (Istituto Tevere) and Nadjia Kebour (Istituto Internazionale Jacques Maritain).
The Centro Pro Unione is a ministry of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, a community primarily dedicated to the promotion of unity among Christians and dialogue and understanding among all faiths.
