The PISAI in the Consistory of October 5, 2019

The PISAI participated with great joy in the Consistory of October 5, 2019 during which Pope Francis created 13 new cardinals as a sign of the "vocation of the missionary church".

Among the new cardinals two names linked prominently and for a long time to the PISAI in relationships of collaboration and friendship: H.E. Cardinal Michael L. Fitzgerald, MAfr, a member of the Society of Missionaries of Africa, was papal nuncio to Egypt and delegate to the Arab League from 2006 until his retirement in 2012. Previously he was Secretary (1987-2002) and then President (2002-2006) of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. Card. Fitzgerald worked at the PISAI from 1968 to 1978, first as a professor and then as President (1972-1978), and still collaborates with the PISAI’s journal Islamochristiana.

H.E. Cardinal Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, MCCJ, a member of the Combonian Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus, President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue has been involved in the field of interreligious dialogue since the beginning of his priestly ministry. He taught Islamic Studies for several years, first in Khartoum, then in Cairo, and finally in Rome at the PISAI, where he was Director of Studies from 2003 to 2006 and then President from 2006 to 2012.

To both of them the most sincere and loving wishes of PISAI for this prestigious recognition.
