Jason Welle, O.F.M., Director of Studies at PISAI, has recently given two public lectures on the encounter between Francis of Assisi and the Ayyubid Sultan al-Malik al-Kāmil. The first, entitled “Francis and the Sultan: The Ṣūfī Element”, took place at an international conference organized by the Centre for Catholic Studies at Durham University (UK). The November 5-7 conference on the Franciscan Legacy involved dozens of scholars from across the world, both members of the Franciscan family and academicians who specialize in the Franciscan tradition.
Cardinal Michael Fitzgerald, a former President of PISAI, also participated in this conference, moderating a panel on Muslim-Christian dialogue.
Welle’s lecture on 12 November, “Fraternity Beyond Frontiers,” formed part of the Autumn series of public conference at the Lay Centre at Foyer Unitas in Rome, a residential community dedicated to formation of the laity and the promotion of ecumenical and interreligious dialogue.
