Bishop Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, MCCJ has been appointed President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue by Pope Francis, succeeding Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, who died last July.
A PISAI alumnus, Bishop Ayuso Guixot, was born in Seville (Spain) on 17 June 1952. On 2 May 1980, he professed his perpetual vows in the Institute of Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus. He was ordained a priest on 20 September 1980, and then ministered in Egypt and Sudan until 2002.
In 1982 he obtained a License in Arabic and Islamic Studies at PISAI and in 2000 a Doctorate in Theology at the University of Granada.
He taught Islamic Studies for several years, first in Khartoum, then in Cairo, and finally in Rome, at PISAI, where he was successively Director of Studies from 2003 to 2006, and Rector from 2006 to 2012. Since 30 June 2012, he has been Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. Appointed titular Bishop of Luperciana by Pope Francis in January 2016, he was consecrated on the feast day of Saint Joseph of the same year.
