Islamochristiana

undefinedIslamochristiana is the annual scientific journal of PISAI explicitly dedicated to Muslim-Christian dialogue. It is composed of three parts: the first part contains in-depth and research studies, reflections and personal witness accounts; the second part, notes and documentation concerning encounters between Christians and Muslims around the world; and the third part, summaries and reviews of books on dialogue. Founded in 1975 and directed for many years by Maurice Borrmans, the journal has developed its format over the years. Since 2006, under the direction of Valentino Cottini one part of the studies revolves around a monographic subject chosen each year, while other essays are devoted to Muslim-Christian dialogue in the past and the present. Issues 48 (2022) and 49 (2023) were published under the Interim Editorship of Diego Sarrió Cucarella with David Marshall as Guest Editor. Islamochristiana is published mainly in French, English and Arabic, but articles and studies are also published in other European languages.
Islamochristiana is listed among the class A scientific journals recognized by MIUR.

FIFTY YEARS OF ISLAMOCHRISTIANA
JERUSALEM

This issue celebrates 50 years of Islamochristiana since its first apparition in 1975. The first essay in this volume has been contributed by Professor Valentino Cottini, who provides an expert account of the history of Islamochristiana from its foundation and early years through to recent developments. The essay, written in Italian, will be of interest to many who value Islamochristiana, so substantial summaries in French and English were provided, rather than the brief abstracts that normally accompany essays.
A remarkable fact about Islamochristiana, and surely a major reason for its long-term success, is that for its first 47 editions it was mainly produced under the skilful guidance of just two Editors, first Professor Maurice Borrmans and then Professor Cottini, with the exception of the numbers 7,8, 9 and 10 edited by Robert Caspar. In contrast, the last three years have seen more changes. For the 2022 and 2023 volumes (Islamochristiana 48 and 49), Professor Diego Sarrió Cucarella took on the role of Editor (ad interim), and invited Dr David Marshall to collaborate with him as Guest Editor. For this 2024 volume, Professor Wasim Salman, the new President of PISAI, has also taken up the role of Editor of Islamochristiana, with David Marshall remaining as Guest Editor.
This volume offers eleven essays, including the one by Professor Cottini already mentioned. A group of four essays focuses on Jerusalem: Yazid Said considers Jerusalem in the Christian theological imagination and in Islamic claims; David Neuhaus provides an expert overview of the policy of the Vatican towards Jerusalem from 1917 to the present; Agapios Abu Saada’s essay (in Arabic) discusses the status of Jerusalem as the supreme holy place of global Christianity; A joint contribution from Elizabeth Marteijn and Ruba Totah shows how the writings of Tawfiq Canaan (1882-1964) illuminate aspects of the city’s multi-dimensional history. Two essays explore questions in the interface between Muslim and Christian religious thought. Gonzalo Villagrán draws from writings of the influential Islamist Sayyid Qutb an account of his implicit understanding of citizenship; Mahdi Moraveji considers Mahmoud Ayoub’s writing on redemptive suffering. In the Christian-Muslim encounter, Ann Logie’s essay addresses a topic highly relevant to Christian and other religious minorities in the United Arab Emirates; Wasim Salman’s essay (in Arabic) focuses on the relationship between power and Islam in the writings of Aziz al-Azmeh. Finally, a pair of contributions from Pierre Masri (in Arabic) and Diego Sarrió Cucarella focus on a Christian Arabic text from the tenth century. In the rest of the volume the usual substantial section of “Notes and Documents” and a number of “Book Reviews”.

This volume also includes pieces In memoriam of two figures who contributed greatly to the work of PISAI: Cardinal Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, who served as President 2006-2012, and Justo Lacunza Balda, President 2000-2006.

Études arabes

The first edition of ÉTUDES ARABES appeared at Easter 1962: it consisted of a dossier of about 30 pages, trimestral, with the translation into French of some Arabic texts and targeting those who, having completed studies at PISAI, wished to pursue their linguistic commitment to Islamic Studies. Only on reaching edition No. 8, at Christmas 1964, did it become a real publication with an index of modern Arab authors.
In 1981, ÉTUDES ARABES became a means of support for Islamic Studies in the form of two annual Dossiers containing monographs. Since 1996, publication has been annual, maintaining the formula of an Arabic text with facing translation. The editorial board is made up of teachers at PISAI.

Encounter

undefinedThe review Encounter, Documents for Muslim-Christian Understanding, now obsolete, appeared in 1974, in the wake of the setting up of the English section at PISAI. Its primary purpose was to maintain links with former students at PISAI continuing their formation and offering to all its readers documents, research material and witness accounts in the field of Muslim-Christian Dialogue.
